Summer 2017, Post #10

First, read "Tool 33" in Writing Tools and then Lia Purpura's "Brief Treatise Against Irony" in Brief Encounters.

Explain in a sentence or two how you could use purposeful repetition (as Purpura does by personifying "irony" as the opening line for most of her paragraphs) in your personal essay.

  1. I can use purposeful repetition in my personal essay in order to reinforce a key idea. For example, my essay describes a tragic event that shaped my life in good and bad ways and repeating the tragic event keeps reinforcing my main idea in my essay.

  2. I can use purposeful repetition for the emotion of "regret" that lingers throughout the essay. It would be useful to tie it in by maybe personifying it in each paragraph.

  3. Repetition can be used to instill imagery within the audience to further accent a point. By using this rhetoric the author can drive a point to the audience without explicit speculation. In my essay I continually reinforce the anxious obsession with perfection I felt throughout my life as I strive towards a law degree. This obsession is not explicitly stated but laced in the vocabulary used. I relate a story of a time when I tried to pick a career path when I was a young child. This story lays the groundwork for the rest of the paper to continue the ideology. In this way the audience reaches the same conclusion at the end of the paper with a remaining question left to ponder.

  5. I can use purposeful repetition in my essay when referencing the questions which define the different stages of my life. Placing each question at the beginning of the defining moments of my life will give a better flow to the essay, and a better understanding of the importance of my life changing experiences.
