Gathering Ideas

The next posts will have two distinct purposes and will focus on answering two specific questions: "What should I write about?" and "How should I structure this information?"

First, we'll discuss what you "should" write about.  The general essay topic is "Lost and Found," which is a broad category that could be approached in any number of ways, so you will want to brainstorm to decide on your angle, your specific approach to the general topic.

As with one of the earlier posts, consider which rhetorical modes you may use: argument, narration, description, definition, exemplification, compare/contrast, cause/effect, division and classification, and process analysis.

Read pages 55-91 in Telling True Stories; these sections will help you sharpen your thoughts and prepare you for the essay itself.

For this entry, answer the following questions:

1.  Which rhetorical modes will you use?  How will you use them?  For example, if you plan on using narration, what story will you tell?

2.  Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles.  Who could you profile as part of your essay?

3.  Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection.  How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay?

4.  Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history.  How could you incoporate historical events and people into your essay?

5.  Finally, and most importantly, what will be the "angle" for your essay?  In other words, what will be the unique perspective and approach you will bring to the general (and ambiguous) category/theme of "Lost and Found"?

  1. 1. Which rhetorical modes will you use? How will you use them? For example, if you plan on using narration, what story will you tell?
Narration: I plan on telling the story of how a wife lost herself during her husband’s battle with liver failure.
Description: I will use description to identify the characters/subjects and events in my essay.
Definition: Because my essay will be medical related, I will be explaining and defining various words.

    2. Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles. Who could you profile as part of your essay?
I will be profiling two different people in my essay: a patient I took care of and his wife who essentially lost herself during his years of visiting the hospital.

    3. Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection. How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay?
I won’t necessarily be incorporating my own personal experience of being lost but an experience I witnessed. I was the nurse of a patient who frequently visited the hospital for years and will be telling the story of how his wife lost herself mentally and emotionally throughout the years.

    4. Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history. How could you incoporate historical events and people into your essay?
I plan to incorporate history into my essay by reporting the death rate data of liver failure.

    5. Finally, and most importantly, what will be the "angle" for your essay? In other words, what will be the unique perspective and approach you will bring to the general (and ambiguous) category/theme of "Lost and Found"?
I plan on being a character in my story; I want to tell the story of how the wife of a patient I took care of for years lost herself from taking care of her ill husband.

    1. Yikes, this sounds like a great essay already !

  2. 1. Rhetorical modes: Narration, cause/effect, & process analysis.
For narration, I'd just like to put some personal anecdotes in the essay to make it more relatable. Cause/effect will help the essay "bloom", as in the relationship between lost and found can be better formed. Process analysis will connect and look into that relationship.

    2. Profiling: I would like to profile various people I know that have gone through both tragedy and triumph (still pondering).
Here's a couple ideas- Profile a woman (keeping this general on purpose) who has lost her husband to disease (again, general), profile a woman who has lost her son to unexpected tragedy, and profile a best-friendship.

    3. First-person introspection: I will play a role as both narrator and character. I, myself, will be placing myself in the shoes of the above mentioned profiles, and I'll provide a personal anecdote of meeting my fiancee (mushy, I know).

    4. Historical events/people: History will be briefly discussed (I already have so much content!), however I'll be talking about the prevalence of disease and tragedy in America, along with the bright opportunities time has given America.

    5. Point of view: While I don't usually like to switch back and forth...I'd like to alternate between first and third person to build intensity and strengthen interest.

  3. 1. The rhetorical modes I plan to use will be narration, and talk about a story about something I lost and what was the overall outcome of it when I came to the end of my journey. I will use description which will help me portray the overall message in a better angle. Then I plan on using others but I will probably think of them once I actually start writing the essay.

    2. The profiles I will use will be myself for one, and then the many characters I came into contact with when I went on this fictional journey of lost and found.

    3. My previous experiences in life will help dictate the actions I made on this journey.

    4. I could incorporate historical events by how they have affected other people and the way it has affected them is now affecting how they treat me, such as previous wars, that have affected people and how they are now going to treat a " foreigner" like me.

    5. I plan on being the main character in this story as of right now. I will tell this story in first person view.

  4. 1. The rhetorical modes I will be using are description, compare and contrast, narration, and cause and effect. I will use description to describe my personal experience. I will use compare and contrast to describe the differences. I will use narration to tell my story. I will use cause and effect to explain what happened to me than, and how I am today.
    2. I will be profiling myself, and where my personal experience took place. For example, I will be profiling the personality of the setting.
    3. I could incorporate my own experiences in my essay, by using the character technique.
    4. I could incorporate historical events, and people in my essay on what has happened to me then, and what has happened to the people, and myself now.
    5. My main focus of this essay is to tell my perception of lost and found.

  5. 1) I plan to use several of the various rhetorical modes to help tell my personal story. While I am not entirely sure on the precise direction I would like to take my story I believe I will rely upon narration, exemplification, description, and definition. I think by incorporating these elements I will be able to create a nice story based on the "lost & found" theme.

    2) Ultimately, this essay will be about myself, my reflections on the "lost & found theme", but perhaps I could express my sentiments about myself by profiling someone else. I will have to think about this.

    3) I could use narration to help detail my personal reflections on the subject matter. Additionally, I could use the mode of "cause & effect" to help explore the relationship between ideas and objects and how I personally make sense of it all.

    4) I could incorporate historical figures and settings to my essay through the use of narration, description, and definition. For example, I could incorporate a relevant adage or a historical quote or two.

    5) I would like for my essay to express my viewpoints on the subject. In other words for readers to hear my voice as they read my essay. However, I am still in the thinking stages and have a lot of ideas for where I would like to take my essay.

  6. 1. Which rhetorical modes will you use? I will use the rhetorical mode of compare and contrast, narration, and either cause and effect or description.
How will you use them? Napoleon Bonaparte, an Emperor, lost his freedom just as a common criminal; I will tell my personal story of prison; and commit crime, pay the price.

    2. Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles. Who could you profile as part of your essay? An inmate, famous or not.

    3. Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection. How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay? I am a Correctional Officer at a prison. I will tell my own stories.

    4. Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history. How could you incorporate historical events and people into your essay? Famous prisons, or notorious prisoners like Charles Manson, Andrea Yates, or Napoleon.

    5. Finally, and most importantly, what will be the "angle" for your essay? In other words, what will be the unique perspective and approach you will bring to the general (and ambiguous) category/theme of "Lost and Found"? Freedom is lost, and many proclaim they find spirituality. I have not thought of a creative angle yet.

  7. 1. Rhetorical modes:
Narration – I plan on telling the story of how a woman lost herself when her father abandoned and neglected her as well as how a man had lost himself when he comes home from war. Their two stories collide and find themselves drawn to each other.
Description – to recognize and identify the characters and events in my narration.
Exemplification – use a few of my personal examples that relate to that story.
    2. Profiling:
Here I am not certain as to whom I want to profile for my essay. I know that I want to profile both a man and a woman who have lost themselves and eventually find each other in order to relate to my story.
    3. First-person introspection:
I will incorporate a few of my stories in which I have felt lost emotionally because of certain events that have happened in my life (this is probably where my exemplification will come along). Good thing I keep a journal of this.
    4. Historical events/people:
I plan on researching stories of soldiers who have come home from war as well as the outcome of that from their families.
    5. Point of view:
I plan on angling my essay into my perception of “Lost and Found.” I will probably end up being the main character of my essay that is telling a story of two people in which I can relate to. I may change my point of view, but as for now, I would take this approach.

  8. 1. Rhetorical Modes: I will be using narration to tell the story of a man who was lost throughout life and when he and his family accepted that he was gay, he found himself. I will also describe feelings of characters distress.

    2. Profiles: I will be profiling my boyfriend as he experienced the acceptance that his father was gay. I will also profile his father who truly found himself after 40 years of questioning.

    3. First-person Introspection: I will incorporate my own experience by explaining how I helped my boyfriend work through accepting his father for who he is.

    4. Historical events/people: I could incorporate how gay rights have come a far way through history. For example being gay is no longer in the DSM as a disorder. Also, gay marriage is almost legal in all US states.

    5. Angle/ perspective/approach/theme of "Lost and Found": I will be a character in the story, witnessing a man who was lost for many years finally find himself with the help of his son and family members.

  9. 1) I will use narration to tell a story of how a young girl lost herself because of love, and how her loss of self impacted her relationships with others. I will also use description to describe situations and characters.
    2) I will be profiling 3 people in my essay: a young girl in love, her boyfriend and her friend.
    3) I will be incorporating my own experiences in my essay by telling a story that I've actually went through with a girl that used to by one of my bestfriends.
    4) I could possibly incorporate statistics of domestic abuse and the damaging impacts.
    5) I will be a character in my story. I will be telling the story of how I practically witnessed my friends self destruction.

    1. Which rhetorical modes will you use? How will you use them? For example, if you plan on using narration, what story will you tell?
Narration is the rhetorical mode I will be using to tell my story of a young teenage couple that struggled through college while they were pregnant and accomplished their goals.
Description is what I will be using to describe both partners and the obstacles they encountered.
I will also use cause and effect to describe how being pregnant affected their whole lives, and will explore how they managed.

    2. Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles. Who could you profile as part of your essay? I will be profiling the couple. The female on how she managed and the male on he supported her and tell each of their feelings, thoughts, and ideas.

    3. Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection. How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay? I cannot relate the experience to myself but I was there for this person because he happens to be a close friend of mine. Therefore, observing is allowing me to explain and tell what happened from start to finish. Details of how and what the couple accomplished their goals and were successful will be incorporated from my point of view.

    4. Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history. How could you incorporate historical events and people into your essay?
For this topic, I strongly believe that the best way to incorporate historical events and people to this essay is by taking the data of pregnancy rates in Kern County for young adults under the age of 20, and creating ratios that will represent the data and show how it has increased or decreased over time.

    5. Finally, and most importantly, what will be the "angle" for your essay? In other words, what will be the unique perspective and approach you will bring to the general (and ambiguous) category/theme of "Lost and Found"?
I will be a character telling the story. Everything I saw, heard, lived, and advice will be incorporated in the essay. I plan on angling my essay and leaning towards the main topic, “Lost and Found.” How the couple was lost at one time and eventually found themselves within each other.

  11. 1. I plan on using narration for my story, using narration to explain how loosing someone only found joy and hope through it. And be describing how I was able to only become a strong person through it.
    2. Through this essay I will be profiling myself and the person whom I have loved and lost and the strength that came through that.
    3. I wil be using narration from a first person point of view to tell this story of mine. And how the outlook of my view had affected my choices I have made.
    4. I will be using historical people and events that have led up through the past years to bring me to this point in my journey and the person I am today.
    5. Through first person point of view I will be explaining the lost and found and how through the dark point I was able to find the light.

  14. 1. Which rhetorical modes will you use? How will you use them? For example, if you plan on using narration, what story will you tell?
    I will use:
-Definition: Define different types of mental problems people experience
-Description- i will describe how they are lost within another world, sometimes able to come to senses, and others not being able to.
-Narration: I will narrate the stories of different people i witnessed who have these problems and how they act and what they say.

    2. Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles. Who could you profile as part of your essay? I will profile people with mental problems.

    3. Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection. How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay?
    - I dont have personal experience in this subject, I will only narrate the ones of other people.

    4. Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history. How could you incoporate historical events and people into your essay?
    - I will find statistics of how many people have registered into mental hospitals without showing any signs of progress, and spending the rest of their lives there.

  15. 1. Which rhetorical modes will you use?
Narration: I will probably tell a story about a boy who lost a special gift that few people get to have, but only to lose it. His journey to find the gift and finding out the true meaning of it. This is my main rhetorical mode I will be using and probably use others such as compare and contrast from the story I will be narrating.

    2. I will be profiling my close friend who recently came back to school after dropping out because he was lost in the path to take.

    3. I will incorporate my experiences by using the rhetorical mode, compare and contrast. I will contrasting my experiences from the above story. Also compare my experiences to that of my friend because I went through a similar phase that he is going through now.

    4. Well, incorporating history in my essay is not really my style. But I suppose I can use past data for student drop outs. I believe with the above stories and the rhetorical modes used is plenty of information. If history is required I can probably squeeze it in.

    5. I guess my angle is guiding my friend through his experiences of lost and found because I also have gone through it. I will bring the perspective of his point of view of his "lost and found" situation and my perspective after I have gone through it.

  16. 1. Which rhetorical modes will you use? How will you use them? For example, if you plan on using narration, what story will you tell?
I plan to use narration and tell the story of how a teenage girl found motivation and comfort after leaving her home, first to another city then to the United States.
I will also use description to exemplify the senses and adapting figurative language into the story to bring it out more.

    2. Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles. Who could you profile as part of your essay?
I plan to profile this teenage girl-who is also my mother. I want to get her story as detailed as possible to not create faulty descriptions. Afterwards, I will tie her story to the macro level by speaking about immigrants as a whole.

    3. Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection. How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay?
I could incorporate my personal experiences as part of the essay by comparing and contrasting the experiences I had compared to the experiences my mother had when we were about the same age. I could also write how culture determines how a child will grow up in order for the reader to know that the experiences don’t completely stand side-by-side. Instead, they demonstrate the cultural and economical differences that people face in different parts of the world.

    4. Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history. How could you incorporate historical events and people into your essay?
I plan to research several stories of immigrants that have gone through a similar situation to write about immigration on the macro level. Many of the stories I find will be similar, where teenagers immigrated to the United States to have a better living for themselves and help support their family back home.

    5. Finally, and most importantly, what will be the "angle" for your essay? In other words, what will be the unique perspective and approach you will bring to the general (and ambiguous) category/theme of "Lost and Found"?
I plan to be a very minimal character in this essay, since I will mostly be present as an outcome to her journey. The story will mostly reflect the story of my mother and her family. I have witnessed certain angles to this story since I do travel to her home country very often. I plan to incorporate these experiences into the essay to also show my perspective toward the situation at hand.

    1. I will be using narration by telling a story of how a mother deals with taking care of her children on her own. Not being a single mother but a wife of a NAVY man. Also, how the children dealt with an absent father. I will also use exemplification to provide my personal example with my father. I will use description and describe the setting of the "military life/household".

    2. Pages 66-74 in Telling True Stories focus on profiles. Who could you profile as part of your essay?
I will be profiling two characters. My mother who experienced what it was like and how she dealt with it and high school friend who recently married with a Marine.

    3. Pages 74-85 in Telling True Stories focus on using first-person introspection. How could you incorporate your own experiences into your essay?
I will be incorporating my experience of being lost as the child who knew who her father was but was never physically there.

    4. Pages 86-88 in Telling True Stories focus on using history. How could you incoporate historical events and people into your essay?
I will incorporate history and people in my essay by providing the places/countries that my father had been stationed to and why he was stationed there.

    5. Finally, and most importantly, what will be the "angle" for your essay? In other words, what will be the unique perspective and approach you will bring to the general (and ambiguous) category/theme of "Lost and Found"?

    2. I will be profiling junior high students as a whole, a specific person that used to be in my life, and God.

    3. I will be narrating the story of my own depression during my adolescent years and provide a first-hand experience of the thought process and feelings of someone that goes through depression.

    4. I will either be including a background about a famous figure that experienced depression such as Robin Williams, or providing input about theories and historical aspects from my own mental health studies. It would include thoughts from Freud and theories from people such as Erikson.

    5. I am going to be teaching others what it feels like to truly be depressed and contemplate suicide on a daily basis. I will then explain that it is possible to escape the cycle of depression.

  22. Needless to say I will be by soon to see you. As I read all of these great ideas I feel as though mine might be lacking. My inspiration came while I was scrolling through the last blog entries.
    1. I will use a combination of narration, cause and effect, argument and probably some description. My narration will tell a story of a person who thinks their world is falling apart because they have lost the most important thing (their cell phone).
    2. Anyone really. Cell phones are an addiction that everyone suffers from. There are two approaches that I am playing with. The first, a business person that has their whole life on their phone. The second, an old person trying to figure out to use it. For the second one I thought my parents might interesting. Not just for comic relief but also because I have watched them fall victim to its addicting powers.
    3. My own experiences would be easy. I have been through several cell phones myself. While including myself and my own story I think I will be the one trying to break the cycle. The Wall-e character.
    4. History will be a fun element. I will include the pattern of laziness, obesity, and even unemployment because of the addiction to cell phones. I will try not to stray into all electronics here. That will prove to be difficult for me- I am an anti-gamer.
    5. I would like to incorporate a spin. Something like: when people loose their phones they think their entire world is lost. In actuality if they lost their phones permanently then they would truly find themselves. Basically I would be saying that we have lost ourselves in our addiction to our phones.

  23. 1. Rhetorical modes:
The rhetorical modes I plan on using are narration, definition, exemplification, and cause and effect. I think I am going to write about how health issues, such as disability, can cause individuals to feel incomplete and lost. I will probably define a few medical terms, as well as provide examples on this topic.

    2. Profiles:
I plan to profile individuals who deal with disability, and their friends/family.

    3. First-person introspection:
I can incorporate my own experiences because I have seen two of my loved ones become physically disabled, and I was affected both times.

    4. Historical events:
I can incorporate history by perhaps researching statistics related to disability and/or medical conditions that cause disability.

    5. Angle:
I plan on writing this essay from my perspective, so it will be in first-person. The paper will be composed of my viewpoints and emotions.

  24. I want to use a narration to explain my story and description to describe both of my parents. Cause and effect will be used to show how I lost the relationship with my dad only to get a great relationship with my mom and his sister. I am going to profile my dad. I like how the book “Telling True Stories” words profiling another human. They are correct in saying that it is hard to describe someone else’s core because people are so complicated. I will incorporate some of the shared memories I have with my dad to help explain the man he is. For incorporating history, I will describe how people lived in Egypt where my dad grew up to paint a better picture of him. I thought of telling the story like a fictional story only to reveal at the end it is a true story. I might just narrate it as myself though.
