Post 1: Introductions and Questions

For this initial blog post, introduce yourself in a brief paragraph (major, career goals, hobbies, etc.), and ask one question you have about the class.  Make sure you read the syllabus before you ask your question . . .

  1. Hello, my name is Dakota Bollinger. I major in nursing and I am currently in my last year of the nursing program at CSUB. My goal is to become a registered nurse and I should be completing this goal pretty soon! In my free time, I like to draw, paint, golf, snowboard, play video games, and listen to music. My question is, how early do you create blog posts for this class? For example, for the reading we have to complete by January 12th, when do you create a post corresponding to that reading assignment?

    1. Hi Dakota,

I'll try to give you two or three days to complete these blog posts, and if they happen to be a day late, that's no problem. These blog posts will help you with your writing assignments, so you don't want to fall behind, but I am not too much of a stickler on the exact moment the post is due.

  2. Hello, my name is Lourdes Flores. My major is Liberal Studies. I aspire to teach K-2 in the near future. I like to workout, cook, and spend time with my family on my spare time.
How long do the blog responds have to be?

    1. Hi Lulu!

The blog posts have to be thirteen minutes long.

No! The posts need to be as long as they need to be. Sometimes you'll have more to say, in which case the entry may be a long paragraph. Other times, your response may be a single sentence. It all depends on the context/question.

  3. Hi,
My name is Rebecca Saceaux. I am majoring in Child Adolescent Family Studies. I am married, I recently just celebrated my 1 year anniversary this past December. I don’t have any children, but I do have a kitten and his name is Diablo. He is very playful and keeps me company when my husband is gone during the evenings at school. I enjoy reading and I love the smell of new books. I also love to take naps.
I have worked with children for about 6 years now. I started when I was a senior in High School. I am currently working as a Librarian at an Elementary School. My plan is to graduate with my BA in CAFS, start the credential program soon after, and begin my journey to become an Elementary School teacher. My passion is to teach children. I want to acquire a job that I know I will love to do every day. I look forward to accomplishing my goals one step at a time.
Will the essays that we write need to be submitted to Turnitin.com or is that just optional to use?

    1. Hi Rebecca,

We will be using Turnitin.com for all the essays. This program (in my opinion) is more effective than using Blackboard for submitting assignments. I am able to comment on your assignments through Turnitin.com as well, so for an online class, the program is vital.

  4. Hello! My name is Antuanette Garza. I started out wanting to be a High school Biology teacher, but I have sometimes felt that I want to teach middle school science or elementary school. This is why I decided on majoring in Liberal Studies with a subject matter authorization in introductory science in case I decide I want to switch to middle school or elementary. When I am outside of school, I love to play video games, spend time with my family, draw, and play with my dog Lily. Here is my question. Is going on MyWritingPlusLab necessary or just something you recommend that can help us?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Antuanette,

MyWritingPlusLab is completely optional. You are already paying for it as part of your student fees, so I'd recommend using it when you need it. For example, the program has an option where you can submit one essay a quarter for detailed feedback. If you're taking a class where you have to write a 30-page paper that forms a significant portion of your grade, I would recommend sending that essay in for the feedback.

  5. Hiii! My name is Kaitlyn Smith. I am a liberal studies major. I want to become an elementary school teacher. I would like to teach 4th through 6th grades. I work at in a daycare program for the Norris School District. In my free time I like to read, play with the pets, and spend time with family. My question is, is there a certain word count we have to meet for the blog posts?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Kaitlyn,

Yes, there is a certain word count for these posts. You must write exactly 23 1/2 words per post . . .

No! There is no specific word count. Normally, we would be having these discussions in class, but since this is an on-line class, we're having them here. Just like in a regular class, sometimes you have more to say than other times, and that's fine.

  6. Hello everyone. My name is Guadalupe Cernas. I am a junior and a Liberal Studies major. I intend to begin credentials as soon as I graduate. Hopefully, I become a special education teacher and teach 3rd grade. Becoming a Speech Therapist is also on my goals list, but that will happen later on in the future. What I do on my free time is clean, watch Supernatural, and arts and crafts.
We will not be given the topic to our essay till Saturday, correct? I had trouble submitting my blog on here. It would erase every time I would want to submit it.

    1. Hi Lupe,

Yes, I will not give you your topic until Saturday, but the topic will be a general one that does not require any specific knowledge. Sometimes the blog has a glitch, so if it doesn't let you post, send me your response in an e-mail, and I'll post it for you.

  7. Howdy all,

I am thoroughly disappointed as this is the second time I had to type this because apparently I have no clue what I am doing.

With that being said, my name is Mary Ward. I am a Psychology student minoring in Sociology. Despite my tentative graduation schedule for June of this year, I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I have an array of interests including family law, mortuary science and forensics.

In my spare time which I can assure you is a luxury, I enjoy photography. My favorite pictures are generally of families or children. I hope to dedicate more time in learning more about it and continuing to photograph special moments for friends once I complete my education.

I have a few questions in regards to this class. Is anyone else totally freaking out over this class like me? I am type A personality and I know I have a tendency to overreact so it may just be me. Also does the professor offer office hours by appointment? Between my full time job, four classes and family time is definitely hard to come by.

    1. Hi Mary!

Yes, I do offer office hours by appointment, so just let me know when you'd like to meet. Other students are probably freaking out over this class, but don't worry: there are many things to worry about in life, but this class isn't one of them . . .

  8. Hello everyone!

My name is Laura Castro, a double major in Chemistry and Religious Studies. Graduating in the spring, I am an aspiring physician who would love to practice family medicine in an underserved area of Bakersfield. I will be applying to medical school next cycle. Alongside health professionals, I have helped host free medical clinics in third world countries such as Ghana, Panama, and Nicaragua, as well as in underprivileged regions of Bakersfield. I am a Research Assistant at Kern Medical Center where I help physicians conduct clinical research throughout the year. I am also involved in various non-profit organizations.

I love to travel, rock climb, cycle, and practice yoga. I decided to double major in Religious Studies because the academic study of many religious worldviews, theories and ideas has allowed me to expand my consciousness and see beauty in the smallest of things. My bike’s name is Alex, my car's name is Einstein and I have a pug named Elvis. I am 22 years old.

Does the formal argument essay have a rough draft and final draft or is it just done in class?

    1. Hi Laura!

The formal argument is just done in class, so you won't have time to write both a rough and final draft.

  9. Hello everyone,

My name is Danielle Zbysenski and I am a CAFS major in my junior year. My plan is to graduate with my BA and then enter the credential program so that I can eventually teach elementary school, hopefully either kindergarten or first grade.

In my free time I really enjoy spending time with my family. We love to go to the beach and eat fresh seafood. We also love Disneyland and try to go as often as our schedules allow.

My question is that I have been told that the essays that we write for this class come from old essays from the CBEST. Is there any truth to this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Danielle,

The format of the in-class essay is similar to the format of the CBEST, but the actual topics are not the same. Otherwise, the two out-of-class essays are not similar at all (other than being essays) to the CBEST questions.

When I'm not at school, I am a personal assistant to a doctor here in Bakersfield. In my free time, I enjoy being with my family, friends, and my Golden Retriever, Romeo. I also really enjoy traveling, cooking, and reading. My question for Professor Woodman is, will there be a certain time limit we will have to write our formal argument when we meet this Saturday?

You'll have at least two hours to write the essay (which should be enough time), but I'll stick around a little longer if anyone needs a few more minutes.

  12. Hello everyone!

My name is Andrea Estrada. I am a Liberal Studies major and hopefully I will be graduating in the spring with my BA and starting the credential program in the fall down in San Diego State. My dream is to teach elementary school, anywhere between 2nd to 4th grade. I used to be a tutor for K-6th and those were the students I enjoyed working with the most. In my spare time, I take joy in spending time with my family, working out, listening to music, trying out new foods, as well as traveling and hanging out with my two dogs.
My question is regarding the peer reviews. Is there a certain time frame for us to respond to our classmates' essay and do we post it on the blog?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Andrea,

When you respond to your classmates' essays, you will do so through the Peermark function on Turnitin.com. In other words, you will submit your rough draft to Turnitin.com, complete the Peermark assignment on Turnitin.com, and then submit the final draft through Turnitin.com. Finally, I will provide my comments and grade your essay through Turnitin.com, at which point you can log in and see the comments and grade.

  15. Hello everyone,
My name is Alexis Maldonado. I am 21 years old and I am a senior. If all goes well I will be graduating in June of 2016. With my degree I plan on becoming a special education teacher, which I am very excited about. I don’t have much free time because when I am not at school I am at work but when I do have free time I love to go to the gym, play with my Pitbull, and spend time with my baby sister. My favorite place in the world is Disneyland. I am fortunate enough to be able to go to my favorite destination at least twice a year. Another fact about me is I just recently got my certification to become a substitute. I am very excited to start this course. I have been told by multiple people that this class is difficult but I am ready for the challenge. In the syllabus it states that we are required to visit you at least once throughout the course, are we supposed to notify you before we come, or can we just drop in during any of your office hours

    1. Hi Alexis,

You can just drop in during my office hours, or --if those office hours don't work-- contact me, and we can meet by appointment.

I am planning to be an elementary school teacher, possibly grades K-3rd. I am working on getting my certificate to substitute so I can start my teaching career. For the past 3 years I have worked with kids as a gymnastics coach. I love my job and working with kids of all ages. My question is, are the blog responses due the same day as the readings? And also what time should they be entered by?

    1. Hi Hannah,

In general, the blog responses will be due the same day as the readings (since they go hand-in-hand). There is no set time required for the responses, but you should respond to one post before the next one is due.

  21. Hi all, my name is Katelyn Flom. I am currently a junior here at CSUB and am majoring in Liberal Studies. I have dreamed of being a teacher since I was younger because my childhood was a little rough and I always felt like my teachers were the only people I could truly rely on. I would love to be that sense of security to a child like my teachers were to me. I work two part time jobs as well as school full time so I don't have much time to enjoy life as much as I would like to. My question is will our final just be the final draft of the Personal Essay?
