    1. Try to use at least three different sources.

  2. In the syllabus, the assignment states that we must include one of the General Education themes to our analysis. Do we use them as evidence, as part of our thesis? Or are we meant to prove one of them alongside our thesis?

    1. You could use the theme as part of your introduction (as part of the hook or background/context), as part of your conclusion, or as part of one of your body paragraphs. Your discussion of the theme won't be evidence, per se, but it will provide context for your argument.

  3. If we are not wanting to use the initial sources we found that we have been using for the blog posts are we able to use others instead?

    1. Yes, you are not limited to the sources you have already found; you may use others (as long as they are credible/scholarly and not wikipedia or other online encyclopedic sources).

  4. Are we required to use the quotes we used in the 4th blog entry, or can we use different quotes?

    1. You may use different quotes; the 4th blog entry was just for practice.

  5. When submitting the essay, should a works cited page be submitted as well?

  6. Would you want a title page when submitting the essay?

    1. APA requires a cover page, but MLA does not, so if you're using APA, you should have a cover page, but if you're using MLA, you shouldn't.

  7. Do I truly HAVE to use an "e-book"? I really dislike staring at a screen. I prefer a physical book in hand. I went to the library, looking for physical sources. Turns out the books I want were in Long Beach, but the library can have them here in a couple days. I'm forcing myself through the "e-book" experience for time expediency all the same.-Samuel

    1. No, an actual book would be just as good! (if not better)

  8. I remembered you said that we are using the blog post assignment as a brainstorming exercise and we're allowed to use other people's ideas to incorporate them into our essays (as long we're not copying each other). If I happen so to like my peer's sources (either from post 2 or 3) am I allow to use them in my essay?

Also, can you clarify how we're going to peer-review each other's papers if you said that you are the only one who can see our papers at Turn It In?

    1. Yes, you are allowed (and encouraged) to use others' sources, and you will be able to peer review each other's papers through the PeerMark system within Turnitin.com.

  9. I am writing my paper in APA format; however, my previous professors told me not to include a running head. Would you like me to use a running head on my paper?

    1. Luminne,

The running head is usually reserved for longer papers, so I'm fine either way: use it if you want the practice, but don't use it if you don't.

  10. Will the rough draft be graded like the first assignment?

    1. I'm not quite sure what you mean. I will be giving it a grade and posting that grade (and my comments) in Turnitin.com, but this is not an in-class essay, so I expect the quality of the essay to be higher and so will be grading with elevated expectations (so be sure to proofread and edit).

  11. Professor, I have a few questions. Is it ok to re-start the paper so much that the argument might be different than from the first writing? I see you don't have a preference between MLA and APA, is that right? I was thrilled to read that we may not need to stick to the sources we originally found. What time of day is the paper due? Thank you.

    1. Yes, it is ok to completely change your original argument. The paper is due at midnight.

  12. Is the paper due at a certain time on Sunday, June 25?

  13. For this paper is the format similar to the in-class essay, but with outside sources? Also for the sources, are sources that are older then 20 years acceptable?
    -Rommel Agustin

    1. Yes, the format will be similar to the in-class essay, but this essay will use sources. These sources should be as recent as possible, but if there's a reason for using an old source (if it's a classic in the field, for example) then go ahead and use it. Otherwise, try to limit your sources to ones published as recently as possible (so that the information is as up-to-date as possible).

  14. Hello

is there a minimum number of quotes or paraphrases that we need to have?

    1. The syllabus specifies four sources, but I'll allow three sources for an acceptable minimum (but it's not a good sign that you're asking about acceptable minimums; you should always strive for excellence, not barely acceptable).

  15. Ideally, how long would you like the essay to be? Excluding cover pager and references.

    ReplyDelete

    1. There will be quite a bit of variety in how long these essays turn out. I would say an "ideal" would probably be somewhere around four-and-a-half pages of text.

  18. Ideally, how long would our quotes have to be?

    1. It depends on the quote. With some quotes, only a short portion of the actual quote is relevant, so that short portion is the only part you should include in your essay. With other quotes, there might be two whole sentences that are important, so you should quote the entirety of those two sentences. It all depends on the quote and your essay.

  19. Do you want us to add the URLs to our citations for the our sources we used on the Works Cited page?

  20. Would I lose points if I decide to use only two sources?

  21. One of my sources is not a PDF file so there are no page numbers. I cited (author, par 4) something like that, is that correct?

Sorry for the late post, I am certain I posted one a couple days ago.
